The B.G. Blog Spot

Yeah!-vember: Reflecting With Thanks on a Most Busy and Musical Autumn 2017

Hello out there to everyone in internet land!

It's been a few weeks since I've sat down to write up a blog post for my webspace, and that's for good reason.  While I thought that my schedule would be slowing down a little bit as it often does in the Autumn months and into the Winter, this year seemed to have alternate plans.  My October days were filled with plenty of performance dates and some time for a little Halloween hijinks, and as I rolled into November I had some really cool events come up as well to be grateful for.

At the very beginning of the month I did some "double dipping" on Saturday November 4th, as I performed at Harmony Vineyard's Fall Festival in St. James, NY in the afternoon, and then in the evening as the opening act for famed Blues guitarist Kerry Kearney for his "Acoustic Summit" at the Crazy Crepe Cafe in Miller Place, NY.  I got the opportunity to perform to some friendly faces both new-to-me and familiar, and it was a great day all around.

In the days that followed after my double-header Saturday, I got myself ready to attend my very first NERFA conference.  NERFA (which is short for North East Regional Folk Alliance) is a group that is dedicated to preserving and advancing the tradition of Folk music.  While I've never considered the music I write and perform as "staunchly Folk", I came to learn throughout the four day conference that I fit right in with even the more traditional and hardcore "folkies".  There were musicians and song writers there from as far West as California and as far North as Canada.  Also present were DJ's, festival promoters, and venue operators from the North East U.S. region.  I had the opportunity to meet so many people who I learned an awful lot from including well-known Singer-Songwriter Vance Gilbert, who delivered the keynote speech of the conference.  (If you've never heard his music, I highly suggest you check it out as he is a very unique writer and performer.)

Music was happening nearly all hours of the day and night through either the formal showcases, the "Guerilla Showcases" that take place in hotel rooms, or even through impromptu jamming and song-circles that happened in the hotel lobby, hallways, and stair wells.  There was plenty of musicians I knew from the Long Island/NYC scene that attended including Pete Mancini, Christine Sweeney, Hank Stone, Travis McKeveny, and many others.  I also had the opportunity to become friends with other musicians and songwriters from all over the North East, and as I mentioned earlier, even as far as the Western U.S.  I met a specific Colorado based Singer-Songwriter Emily Barnes, who I'm glad to say will be joining me and Pete Mancini for a Song-Circle show at the Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport, NY in April of next year.  (Be sure to give her music a listen as well, as she's another talent not to be missed.)

I had one showcase performance at this year's conference, and it was an enjoyable "In The Round" format with Hank Stone, He-Bird She-Bird, and I taking turns performing our tunes as part of the AcousticMusicScene.com Guerilla showcase line-up.  I definitely know I'll be attending next year's conference, and hope to land a few more showcase spots as well.

My month of November wrapped up quite pleasantly with a gig at Clovis Point Vineyard.  Clovis is one of my long running "regular gigs" here on Long Island, but this month's was a little different as I had a surprise visit from WPPB's Brian Cosgrove.  Brian is the DJ of the Afternoon Ramble show on WPPB, and has played my song "Karma" during several of his afternoon sets.  'PPB reaches Long Island and Coastal Connecticut via 88.3 FM, and has the distinction of being Long Island's only NPR affiliate.  It was great to finally get to meet Brian in person and chat with him during one of my set breaks on topics ranging from the current state of Radio and the music industry to our shared appreciation of the legendary Power Pop group Big Star.

... As you can see there was quite a bit to sit down and report back to you all just from the past few weeks, and an awful lot to be thankful for.  I'm looking forward to the Holiday season and the opportunity to dust off and perform some of my tunes from my Santa Songs Holiday EP... and then excited for the new musical adventures that the New Year will surely bring.  Take care of yourselves friends, and I hope to see ya soon!

Septummer/Summtember: A Summary of Sept. 2017's happenings

Hello out there again folks,

So Summer has wound on down a bit, yet the weather around here on Long Island still stayed pretty "Summerish" in the past few weeks.  I've been interchangeably using #Septummer & #Summtember on my social media posts as a way to refer to this reluctance Mother Nature has shown in handing over the reigns to Autumn.  Unfortunately, another expression that happens to describe this particular time in our calendar year is "Hurricane Season".  As I write this, there's plenty of fellow Americans down in Puerto Rico who are dealing with the terrible side effects from the devastation of Hurricane Maria.  Just a few weeks back when the storms started brewing in the Atlantic for 2017, Hurricane Harvey was the first big storm to hit the U.S. mainland.  Like most fellow Americans I saw the images coming in from Houston and they were heart wrenching.  Just as a few days after that Hurricane came, I was hanging out at the yearly Bradstock music festival that happens on the South Shore of Long Island every Labor Day weekend.  I was hanging out on the beer line with fellow Singer-Songwriter and good friend Nick Russell, and he mentioned that he was talking with several other L.I. based musicians and hoping to get together a benefit for the victims who were in the path of Hurricane Harvey in TX.

The word was sent out, and several days later we had ourselves a benefit show at the Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport, NY.  Even with the event announced only days before it would occur, plenty of musicians and folks from the Long Island community came together to raise roughly $800 that we sent directly to the Greater Houston Community Fund.  It never fails to amaze me how much can be done when we can give our time and talents to help those in need.  I know that this unfortunately won't be the last time that we need to band together like this, but we can never forget that together we can always come together to help those when they truly need it.

The evening after the Hurricane Harvey benefit at the Grey Horse, I had the privilege of being the featured performer at the Grounds & Sounds Cafe in East Setauket, NY.  The venue is situated in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, and offers a performance space with pristine sound and great ambiance.  It's easily one of the best listening rooms here on Long Island for a Singer-Songwriter type such as myself to perform at. So many wonderful volunteers help to put this monthly series together, and they should be commended. It's a series that supports original music and the people who create it in a high quality "pro-level" venue. I got a chance to play 17 of my own tunes to a wonderful attentive crowd and did cover versions of a Big Star's "Thirteen" and Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding". I was asked for an encore, which I wasn't expecting, so I tacked on George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity".

There were a few other gigs that happened during the month as well, but you can get an even quicker recap of those by scrolling through either my Faceboook or Instagram pages.  That about wraps it up for now.  I hope to hear from you all or see you at an upcoming gig  -Bryan

... And because of all of the troubles we've been having with the complications from this Hurricane season and other divides in this country that have been reopening, I'll leave you all with a quote from one of my favorite authors, the late great Kurt Vonnegut Jr. from his novel God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater: “Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.”

A most busy Summer 2017 winds on down

There was a time maybe about 8-10 years ago where I took an unintended hiatus from public performance.  I was still writing and recording song demos at home, but I just wasn't actively out performing in really any capacity save for a few speckled gigs here and there.  When I jumped back into playing out and diving head first back into the Long Island music scene, I always said that I'd be satisfied once my performance schedule got to a point where I was out there doing it pretty often.  This Summer that has just passed definitely proved to me that I've reached that point, and while I've always repeated the mantra "busy is good", I'm happy in a way that the Fall is coming and the busy Summer season will be winding down a bit.  Here's some of the "Happy Recap" of what happened even just during the 31 days in August 2017:

I performed a full band show as part of the Sunset Concert Series at Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson, NY on Thursday August 9th.  I've always wanted to perform a show as part of this series ever since I got "back into the scene", and I'm glad that I was able to set one up for this Summer season.

In these photos is the set list from that show. We nixed "B-Movie" & "Amber Lynn", as I opted to not play any tunes solo tonight last minute. We also performed a few of my favorite cover tunes, and also a few that I've yet to record and am hoping to get done in the studio sometime soon,  I think my favorite part of this performance was when we got to "The Party Guest". The sun seemed to dip into the harbor right as the instrumental swell/climax at the end of the song kicked in. I watched the daylight begin to decay as I played the harmonica outro, Mick (bass guitar), Nick (drums), & Chris (keyboards) worked to keep the tension of the end of the song high, and Pete (lead guitar) added as much feedback & guitar wizardry in the key of D as he could. The scenery at that moment matched what I've always felt the overall mood of the song is supposed to be, and the stellar musicians I performed with tonight helped it all come to life. Sometimes, music is just magical like that.

I had a performance during this month just about every third day, or even every other day.  People surely do want to experience live music during the Summer.  One of the more notable gigs I had brought me across the Long Island Sound to Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, CT as part of the Ferry 2 Two Roads yearly event.  I got to ride round trip on the ferry, perform in their outdoor hops garden on a beautiful day, take a VIP tour of the brewery, and sample a whole bunch of Two Road's delicious brews.  I'd certainly say that performing music at times comes with its perks.

... Throughout the rest of the month I also got to play some gigs overlooking the ocean, looking out into gorgeous vineyard rows, and to many new faces as part of the Alive on 25 festival in Riverhead, NY.  (For other photos of these shows, be sure to visit my Facebook or Instagram pages.

While "busy is good", I am glad that this Summer is coming to a close.  As George Harrison once mused, "all things must pass", and it's always refreshing to experience the change of seasons and the ability to get some time to get your bearings back in order.  I'm hoping to use the slow down of my performance schedule to finally get into the recording studio yet again to get some new music out for you all to enjoy.  Until then, keep your eye on my scheduled dates and I hope to see ya at an upcoming show!  -Bryan

Some thoughts on where Music has taken me, both in Body and Mind.

As I was sitting down to do some desk work yesterday on the evening I returned from performing a private wedding event up in the Catskills Mountains in Big Indian, NY, I had a lot of thoughts on my mind and felt the need to write them out.  I was able to, and wanted to share them all with you here:

On my way to the venue, I passed through Woodstock, and saw the sign for the Levon Helm Memorial Highway, which was dedicated to him shortly after he had passed away. When I got to the venue in Big Indian, I couldn't help but be taken back by the beauty and peace of mind I was able to gather deep in the mountain ranges of Upstate NY. I thought to myself that this was probably the same thoughts that the members of The Band had when they holed up in Big Pink with Bob Dylan over in Saugherties in the late 60's to create some of the most iconic recordings in Rock history. Levon included.

Part of my setlist for the cocktail hour I performed was "Atlantic City" (penned by Bruce Springsteen) and "I Shall Be Released" (penned by Bob Dylan). These are both songs that The Band had recorded, and Levon sang lead on the recording for "Atlantic City". I happened to sing both back to back during my set because I did them both in the key of A with the capo on the second fret, so it made sense in terms of keeping tuning changes to a minimum. When I was half way through singing "I Shall Be Released", I realized the connection of both songs as I stared right into a line of trees that seemed limitless in their reach up into the uninterrupted blue sky.

I got lost in those thoughts, and got taken back to a time when I went to one of the Midnight Rambles at Levon's barn (back in 2010 or so) shortly after he had returned from treatment for his throat cancer. I sat in a seat that was so close to him, that I was able to rest the edge of my feet on his drum riser and hear the crack of his snare right in my ear. He didn't sing much because of his illness (he sang a few verses here and there) but his joyous spirit filled the whole room. There was an announcement before the show that Levon would not be signing autographs or anything of the like afterward, but I got up at the end of that show and called over to him a few feet from me to say, "Thank you for the music, Levon!" And he put his hand out to me to shake it and replied in his signature Southern rhasp, "Thank you, son!" A few years later, Levon passed away due to the complications from his illness, but we all thankfully still have the music he created, and I'll never forget that special moment I had at "The Barn".

As I re-centered my thoughts and came back to where I was, staring at the lyrics of "I Shall Be Released" on the page in front of me, I couldn't help but feel a bit emotional but made sure I kept my voice from cracking as there was a job to be done and people to entertain. I suppose the whole point of me sharing this anecdote is that Music is a wonderful thing that can take us places both mentally and physically. I'm so grateful for the musical experiences I've had in my life thus far as without them, I'd be a shell of the person I am today. I hope they never end, and I wish everyone else out there the chance to come across some magical, musical moments in their lives as well.

The Party Guest turns One Month Old + Other Cool News & Shows!

Hey erryone,

Today is November 23rd, and marks one full month since The Party Guest was officially released.  The release show at The Patchogue Theater For The Performing Arts with my buddies Butchers Blind & Mick Hargreaves was a great success.  I've been keeping the ball rolling by playing a lot of cool shows, going to see some cool shows and spreading the word, and all of the other cool work that comes along with being an independent singer/songwriter.  If you haven't picked up a copy of the album, physical or digital, there's still plenty to go around.  I always have copies for sale at shows, and a fancy Sharpie if you'd like it personalized!  Also, the album is available at CD Baby in both physical and digital formats, at my Bandcamp page as high-end digital files, and over at iTunes digitally for you folks who enjoy Apples.

The CD is also available at a fantastic coffee shop that's close to my home base, Tend Coffee.  Tend is located in Shirley, NY and they serve 100% certified organic coffees that are roasted on the premises.  They're a great small independent local business who also happens to support other independent locals, and that I can surely dig.  Be sure to stop in Tend if you're ever in the area, and to keep an eye out for The Party Guest in other brick and mortar stores soon.

As I mentioned the album will be available at shows, and I've got some cool ones coming up this Thanksgiving Weekend:

Friday Nov. 28th at C'est Cheese - Port Jefferson, NY - 7pm
Saturday Nov. 29th at Hoptron Brewtique - Patchogue, NY - 2pm
Sunday Nov. 30th at Tend Coffee w/ special guest Joyce Sobanski - Shirley, NY - 3pm

As always, thank you for your support and for spreading the word!  I'll see ya'll soon at a show or sometime soon enough down the road!

Bryan Gallo's debut album The Party Guest has arrived!

Hey erryone!

Today is the day that I thought would never come, but it's officially here!  My debut album, The Party Guest, is now officially released!

I'll be celebrating with a release show at The Patchogue Theater's Live In The Lobby series tonight with PLENTY of physical CD copies for sale along with cool T-Shirts as well!  I'll be backed by Butchers Blind, who served as the backing band on the entirety of the album.  Also appearing and performing is Chris J. Connolly who is currently support his single "Million Colours" from his very own soon to be released debut album.

(The Danelectro 12 String pictured here will not be available for sale at the release show, but will be available to hear as I'll be "plugging in" for the first time in several years.  Prepare yourself for some jingle-Jangle!)

For those of you who can't make it to the show to purchase a hot-off-the-presses CD, you can find the album for sale over at my Bandcamp page or for you Apple fanatics it seems as if it's already gone live on iTunes as well!  I'm still trying to figure out when and where it should be for sale in a physical medium via CD Baby & Amazon (should be pretty soon) but if you'd really like to get your hands on a CD copy and are not able to attend the release show or won't be at a performance of mine in the near future, feel free to send me an E-mail via this webpage and we'll make it happen!

I'm so excited to be able to share these 11 songs with you all.  This album has literally been years in the making, and Pete Mancini (of Butchers Blind) did a great job producing the album & Mick Hargreaves did an awesome job capturing our sounds via his Lantern Sound Recording Rig.  If you like what you hear, please be sure to spread the word and tell a friend or two.  I'm an independent artist without a record label, so the support from great people such as yourselves is priceless and highly appreciated.

Thank you so much, and happy listening!

I had a few people asking me if there'd be a sneak peak of some of the tunes from The Party Guest before it's released on October 23, so my answer to you is.. "You betchya!"  Take a look at this:

That's the art to the Digital Maxi-Single of "Karma", one of the eleven songs that will appear on The Party Guest. You can preview Karma by going to www.bryangallo.bandcamp.com and give it a whirl.  If you decide you like it a whole bunch, you can download it as a "Name Your Own Price" single (all amounts are acceptable, even $0.00 in case you're a little strapped for cash) and then take it on the road in your iPod, laptop, or heck, be so 2002 and burn yourself a CD of it!  Included with the download are two live tracks: "Waitress On Call" & "Karma", both from a show I did at Soul Sounds Inc. Record Shop in Sayville, NY this past June.  You can only hear those tracks by downloading the single, so be sure to check those out!

... Also, there will be a few radio appearances I'll have before the release show (On Jerry Schaefer's Graveyard Blues on Sunday Oct 12th via WRCN & Tom Ryan's , American Hit Radio thru WHPC on Wed Oct 15th) and I plan on playing some cuts from the album then, so if you want to hear MORE of The Party Guest, be sure to keep an eye out for those radio spots coming up in the next week or two. (More info can be found in the "Shows" section here on the .com)

As always, any help from listeners like you is appreciated, so please feel free to spread the word and share the Bandcamp page for the Karma Maxi-Single with others.

Keep it tuned here and at www.facebook.com/bryangallomuzak for all the latest updates!

Stay classy peeps,
-Bryan

Exciting News! Album Art for The Party Guest Revealed + Other Release Info

Hey all you cool peeps out there!

I'm excited to unveil to the whole World Wide Web, the cover art for my debut album, The Party Guest:

... We took the photo at the Brick House Brewery's "Shand's Loft" in Patchouge, NY which is the cozy upstairs room used for catering and special events.  That evening, Anthony Comesso's first proper Art Show was in full swing, and I figured it'd be a perfect opportunity to capture a cover image for the upcoming album.  The Brick House & I happen to have a lot of history... I got my start as a solo artist by playing their Wednesday night open mic regularly, and since have landed several gigs I was glad to call my own (including one with Butchers Blind backing me this past Spring). Also, for anyone in the know, this is the exact spot where my infamous Birthday Roast took place a few years ago.  That big ol' mug on the cover (the one with the beer in it, not my serious face) is my BHB Mug Club glass... So it's pretty obvious that the BHB is one of my regular hangs.  There's always great craft brews on tap (made in house) and a regular cast of friendly faces.

As you can see from this photo, the BHB is pretty receptive and open to housing original art and music.  There were several shots taken upstairs that evening by the incomparable photog Fred Langstaff and this is the one we ultimately decided to go with.  Included (simply per chance) are several musician friends I know from the local scene and some other friends I've gotten to meet via my gigs and just hanging out on Main St. in the ol' P-Haug.  The photo seemed like the perfect fit for the theme of the album, along as a way to pay homage to those who helped me get to where I'm at today.  Finishing touches were added by the Jack-of-all-trades Mick Hargreaves with the text layout and just a sprinklin' of some magic dust.  (Mick also happened to design the rest of the CD art layout, recorded and mixed the album, and worked tirelessly to help make this album happen.)

... I shared the art today via my Facebook page and my Instagram account, and the response was overwhelming.  It's great to know there's folks out there still rooting for independent artists, and without your support I know I couldn't be where I'm at today.  The album will be released officially on Thursday October 23rd, with a release show at The Patchogue Theater in Patchogue NY.
I'll be backed by Butchers Blind (who served as the backing band on the album) and also billed for the show is the talented Singer/Songwriter & good friend of mine Chris J. Connolly (www.chrisjconnolly.com) who has an album of his own coming out very soon.

We all hope to see you there on Oct. 23rd.. But until then, be sure to keep an eye out for further updates here and over at www.facebook.com/bryangallomuzak ... Some more surprises are in store soon enough!

Take it easy erryone,
-Bryan
