On Friday, June 5th International Poet Bertha Rogers and Local Poet Evelyn Kandel will perform their poetry live. Musician Bryan Gallo will perform his music live.

*Bertha Rogers is a poet, translator, visual artist, and teaching artist. Several hundred of her poems appear in literary journals, anthologies, and in her poetry collections, including Wild, Again; Heart Turned Back; Sleeper, You Wake; Even the Hemlock; A House of Corners; and The Fourth Beast. More than 500 of her poems have been published in literary journals, and she had received eight nominations for the Pushcart Prize. Her translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf was published in 2000, and her translation of the Anglo-Saxon Riddle-Poems from the thousand-year-old Exeter Book, Uncommon Creatures, was published in 2019. In 1992, with her late husband, Ernest M. Fishman, she founded Bright Hill Press & Literary Center of the Catskills; in 2017 she was commended for her work with Bright Hill in the Congressional Record; she retired as executive director in 2017 and now leads the Bright Hill Youth Workshops and serves as Editor in Chief for the Poetry Series. She has been awarded several New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization and NYFA grants for her interdisciplinary exhibits and served as a peer panelist for the NYSCA Literature Program as well as directing the New York State Literary Map and Website and serving on the selection committee for the Empire State Writers Hall of Fame.

*Evelyn Kandel is Nassau County Poet Laureate (2019-2021). Author of four books of poetry, her poems also appear in many anthologies and journals. She teaches poetry classes in Great Neck and Glen Cove and is a proud Marine Corps veteran. Currently, she is preparing a class in poetic forms at Hutton House and a four-part writing series aimed at young teen age girls at Port Washington Library sponsored by One World Girl.

*Bryan Gallo is a Long Island based singer-songwriter who is inspired by the pressures and consequences of living life romantically. Intrigued by both the sounds of alternative country-rock and wistful pop music, he embarked on a career as a performing singer-songwriter and began to pen songs that would be deeply personal but still readily accessible. Steeped in reflective heartache, the lexicon of Gallo’s lyrics stands as a testament to his raw talent as a musician while weaving a flush and relatable.
In 2014, he self released The Party Guest, a debut full length album of all original material produced by Pete Mancini which featured the Roots-Rock band Butchers Blind who served as the album’s session musicians. At the tail end of 2015, Gallo recorded and released an EP of Christmas themed original songs and standards titled Santa Songs, that was self produced with production and engineering assistance from Mick Hargreaves. Bryan is currently at work on new recordings which he hopes to release to the public in 2020.
